Laminates are designed to look and feel like materials such as woods, stones, fabrics and metals. Hence, they are an affordable, low-cost alternative when compared to the actual materials which often, can cost many times more.
Laminates are made of layers of craft paper soaked in resin and bonded under high heat and pressure. They are durable as they are abrasion and impact-resistant under normal use.
Not at all. You can use warm water and a non-abrasive cloth to remove most stains. Use a mild household cleaner or detergent if necessary and rinse with water. For stubborn stains, apply a small amount of thinner and gently remove with a non-abrasive cloth before finishing up with a clean damp cloth. Avoid using any cleaning agent containing acid, alkali or sodium hypochlorite, as they may corrode, discolour or ruin the surface of the laminate.
Laminates generally will not discolour but it is advisable to keep them away from direct sunlight or strong heat sources. In the kitchen, do not place hot cookware directly on laminate surfaces or expose laminates to temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius for prolonged periods.
This is inadvisable as laminates are not meant for heavy and constant, surface-to-surface abrasion.
Most definitely! Laminates need to be applied onto a wood backing (substrate), then the wood backing is installed onto the wall. It is best to talk to your carpenter or ID if you would like to have this done. Laminates should not be applied directly onto walls as walls are porous. Doing so might cause the laminates to de-bond, i.e. come off.
Laminates are suitable for vanities and shelves but the panels must be sealed on all sides with edgebands. It cannot be used on walls or in places where there is heavy flow of water.
Installing laminates requires much know-how and skill. We recommend that you seek the services of an experienced contractor or carpenter who can do the work to a high standard. Poorly installed laminates will not only look unsightly but will delaminate, i.e. peel off, after a while.
